Mountain View, WY

Background: Mountain View, Wyoming, operates a four-cell lagoon for its city wastewater. This lagoon is designed to treat 0.28 MGD domestic wastewater from its 1300 residents. The District has been looking for a solution to replace the current non-performing attached growth biological treatment system to reduce effluent BOD and ammonia in order to meet its discharge limit.

Upgrading to Bio-Domes: Mountain View Wastewater Treatment Plant approached Wastewater Compliance Systems, Inc (WCS) during a presentation about the Bio-Dome technology, and believed Bio-Dome could help them to remain in compliance. The city chose WCS’ patented Bio-Domes over other competitive options, including repairing the existing attached growth biological treatment. It is based on its proven performance in cold weather nitrification, low capital and operating costs, and energy efficiency.

WCS installed 80 Bio-Domes in the partially aerated and settling cells of the facility during July 2017. A real-time continuous monitoring system was also installed at the same time to record the water quality at the end of Bio-Dome system. This monitoring system will be able to facilitate actual control of the operation to optimize efficiency.

The Mountain View community minimized its capital investment costs for the lagoon’s upgrade by choosing Bio-Domes, and will continue to enjoy monthly operating savings due to lower maintenance costs and energy savings compared to alternative solutions. WCS also offers protection to its customers by providing a product warranty that includes a performance guarantee.

Key Benefits of the Bio-Dome®:

  1. A Bio-Dome® system represents the least expensive treatment upgrade available in terms of both capital expense as well as O&M expense.
  2. An upgrade utilizing Bio-Domes will not require operators with additional training, certification, and/or a higher pay grade.
  3. The Bio-Dome® system is intended to be a modular, expandable, system that is capable of growing with the facility over the next 20+ years.
  4. Because of energy efficiency, the Bio-Dome® system can be considered “green” and will aid in qualifying the facility for Energy Efficiency grants if any are available through utility providers.

Bio-Dome® is featured in “Principles of Design and Operations of Wastewater Treatment Pond Systems for Plant Operators, Engineers, and Managers” (EPA/600/R-11/088).
